Have you ever wondered why a handcrafted cold process soap is different from an ordinary bar you pick up at the store? It starts with how the soap is actually made.
Cold process soap making is a traditional method that combines oils and fats through a process called saponification. Rather than simply melting a premade soap base, the soap is created from scratch.
Made From Scratch
At Joli Pop Bath & Body Co., my cold process soaps begin with carefully selected oils and fats. Depending on the recipe, I may use ingredients such as tallow, olive oil, coconut oil, grapeseed oil, castor oil, palm oil, clays, sea salt, and other ingredients.
Different recipes allow me to create bars with their own look, feel, fragrance, and personality.
Saponification: Where Soap Is Made
One of the most interesting parts of cold process soap making is saponification. This is the chemical reaction that transforms the oils and fats into soap.
It's not simply mixing ingredients together—you're actually creating soap through a chemical process.
It Takes Time
Cold process soap requires patience.
Once a batch is made, it's poured into molds, allowed to set, removed, and cut into individual bars. Then comes one of the most important steps: curing.
My bars are allowed to cure for several weeks before they're ready. During this time, excess water evaporates and the bars become harder.
So when you purchase a handcrafted cold process bar, you're getting something that started its journey weeks before it ever reached your shower.
Every Bar Is Unique
This is one of my favorite things about handmade soap.
The swirls, layers, colors, tops, and patterns can vary slightly—even within the same batch. That's part of the beauty of a product made by hand.
No two bars have to look exactly alike to be beautiful.

From developing the fragrance and color combination to pouring, cutting, curing, labeling, and packaging, there are many steps behind a finished Joli Pop soap.
Cold process soap combines science, creativity, craftsmanship, and a whole lot of patience.
And that's what makes it different.
